About: Mr. Tyler has coached at BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) since Fall 2016. BIM had unprecedented success at the Chapter competition and followed through winning States as well. (See the Blog for opinions of the 2017 MATHCOUNTS contest and results). To top off the season, BIM won at the Carderock Math Contest (See the Blog about that win and links from the contest). Mr. Tyler had the privilege of preparing the VA National MATHCOUNTS team (including 2 BASIS students) who competed in Orlando, FL Mother's Day weekend 2017. The team finished 11th at Nationals.

Previous Experiences: Mr. Tyler (as he was affectionately known by some of his previous students) has been active in outreach with Elementary and Middle School in Virginia and Maryland since 2009. Through outreach efforts at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) he participated in FIRST Lego League (2009 – 2010) and then founded the Carderock Math Contest (CMC). Mr. Tyler wrote the contest from 2010 – 2012 and coordinated the event with the generous support and mentorship of Mrs. Toby Ratcliffe. Fortunately, the CMC has carried on after Mr. Tyler's departure from NSWCCD. After leaving NSWCCD, he formed a partnership to have the 2013 and 2014 Northern Virginia Chapter MATHCOUNTS contest held at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Mr. Tyler while at NSWCCD visited several schools in the area and worked with many amazing students. He has been very fortunate to associate with superstars such as Mr. Vern Williams (Math Reasoning) and Mrs. Sarah Manchester (Takoma Park). Mr. Tyler has continued relationships with schools after his time at NSWCCD, but decided to form a business to formalize relationships.
Mr. Tyler graduated from The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) with BS Degrees in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He stayed at Penn State as teaching and research assistant to complete his Master's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Mr. Tyler has published a half dozen papers included his thesis and has additional authorship credits.
